SSR Wheels: Over 50 Years of Japanese Wheel Innovation
Few names carry as much weight in the world of aftermarket wheels as SSR Wheels. Formerly known as Speed Star Racing Wheels, SSR was founded in 1971 in Japan and is widely credited as the first manufacturer to ever produce a three-piece wheel — the iconic SSR MK-I. That single innovation helped transform the way enthusiasts and race engineers thought about wheel design, and it launched a legacy that has endured for more than half a century.
SSR's roots are deeply embedded in motorsport. The brand has served as an official wheel supplier to factory race teams from Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, competing across series including Super GT, the Japanese Touring Car Championship (JTCC), and Formula Nippon. SSR-sponsored teams have claimed multiple championships, and the data gathered from those demanding environments has consistently fed back into the brand's street and aftermarket products.
One of SSR's most significant technical milestones came in 1991, when the company pioneered the Semi-Solid Forging (SSF) process — a patented manufacturing technique originally developed for aerospace applications that produces a wheel with an exceptionally favorable grain structure, delivering strength and light weight in a way traditional casting cannot match. This commitment to advanced manufacturing helped SSR become a benchmark for quality within the Japanese wheel industry, and the brand played an instrumental role in establishing the JWL (Japan Light Alloy Wheel) certification standard in 1973 and the VIA third-party inspection board in 1981.
Today, SSR is owned and operated by Tanabe Co., Ltd., which acquired the brand in 2005 and has continued its tradition of precision manufacturing in Japan. The current lineup spans several distinct sub-brands and series, from the highly customizable three-piece SSR wheels of the Professor series to the motorsport-focused GTX and GTV monoblock designs. Whether the goal is a vintage-inspired street build or a track-ready setup, SSR offers a wheel for the application.
Beyond the wheels themselves, SSR supports a complete wheel fitment ecosystem. Their branded wheel caps — available in several styles and finishes — provide the finishing touch that ties a build together, while their purpose-built wheel hub rings ensure that aftermarket wheels seat precisely on the vehicle's hub bore, reducing vibration and centering the wheel correctly for safe, smooth driving. All SSR wheels are put through rigorous JWL and VIA testing before reaching consumers, reflecting a standard of quality control that goes well beyond what most competing manufacturers require.
For enthusiasts who take their builds seriously — from grassroots time attack to show cars and everything in between — SSR represents a rare combination of proven motorsport heritage, advanced engineering, and timeless Japanese design sensibility.
