What Is a Thermostat & Housing — and Why Does It Matter?

Engine temperature control is the foundation of reliable performance. Engine coolant thermostats and their related housings are the gatekeepers of your vehicle's cooling system, deciding when — and how much — coolant flows between your engine and radiator. When the engine is cold, the thermostat stays closed, allowing it to warm up quickly to its most efficient operating range. Once that target temperature is reached, the thermostat opens, circulating coolant through the radiator to shed excess heat.
