What Is an Engine Camshaft Position Sensor?

The engine camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) is one of the most critical electronic components in a modern internal combustion engine. Camshaft position sensors monitor the rotational speed and position of the camshaft and relay that data directly to the Engine Control Unit (ECU). The ECU then uses this information to precisely control fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and — in vehicles equipped with variable valve timing (VVT) — the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves.

Think of the CMP sensor as the engine's timekeeper. Without an accurate signal from it, the ECU cannot determine when each cylinder is ready to fire or receive fuel. Even a small lapse in timing can cascade into misfires, rough idling, hard starting, reduced fuel economy, or increased tailpipe emissions. In worst-case scenarios, a completely failed sensor can prevent the engine from starting at all.

How Camshaft Position Sensors Work

Most modern CMP sensors operate on the Hall-effect principle. Positioned near a toothed reluctor ring on the camshaft, the sensor detects changes in magnetic field strength as the teeth pass by, generating a digital voltage signal that is transmitted to the ECM. As the camshaft rotates, different points on the ring cause the sensor's output to vary, allowing the computer to pinpoint the camshaft's exact rotational position and calculate cylinder #1's top dead center (TDC) — the baseline from which all ignition and injection timing is derived.

The CMP sensor works in tandem with the crankshaft position sensor so the ECU can cross-reference data from both shafts and coordinate fuel injection and spark events with pinpoint precision across every combustion cycle.
