one of the two wires to the connector was not connected to the connector. It was just dangling, a loose bare wire. I stuffed the wire into the connector to make the switch work. A temporary fix at best but I was trading the car in the next day, so no time to return it for replacement. Someone else's problem now, I guess.

Great product, I bought the transom elevator to mount a long shaft 20 inch outboard to a transom made for a short shaft 15 inch outboard. Worked perfectly and looked great.
