What Is an Engine Mount and Why Does It Matter?
An engine mount — sometimes called a motor mount — is one of the most fundamental components in your vehicle's drivetrain system. Its job is deceptively simple: bolt the engine (and often the transmission) securely to the vehicle's chassis while simultaneously absorbing the vibration, torque, and shock that a running engine constantly generates. Without a properly functioning mount, that energy transfers directly into the cabin, causing everything from annoying rattles and shudders to serious drivability problems.
Most factory engine mounts consist of a steel bracket bonded to a rubber isolator. The rubber cushions vibration and provides just enough flex to keep the powertrain from cracking the frame under hard acceleration or rough road impacts. Over time, heat cycles, oil contamination, and simple age cause that rubber to crack, harden, or collapse entirely — at which point the engine can shift under load, misaligning drivetrain components and putting stress on hoses, wiring, and CV axles that were never designed to flex that far.
Signs You Need New Engine Mounts
- Excessive vibration felt through the floor, seats, or steering wheel at idle or under acceleration
- Clunking or "thunk" noises when shifting into drive or reverse, or during hard acceleration
- Visible cracking or separation of the rubber isolator when inspected
- Engine movement that is noticeable when revving in park
- Misaligned or stressed hoses and cables around the engine bay
OE Replacement vs. Performance Engine Mounts
Choosing the right mount depends entirely on how you use your vehicle. For daily drivers, a factory-equivalent rubber mount restores the quiet, vibration-free experience you had when the car was new. For performance builds — turbocharged engines, track cars, or vehicles used in autocross — stiffer polyurethane or solid billet aluminum mounts dramatically reduce drivetrain flex, improving throttle response and keeping the engine centered under aggressive driving conditions. The trade-off is increased NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) transferred into the cabin, which is perfectly acceptable on a dedicated performance car but can be fatiguing on a street-driven daily.
Top Engine Mount Brands
Anchor is one of the most recognized names in engine and transmission mounts, with a catalog spanning hundreds of domestic and import applications. Their mounts are engineered to meet or exceed OE specifications, making them a go-to choice for professional technicians and DIY mechanics who want a reliable, drop-in replacement.
Innovative Mounts has built a devoted following among Honda and Acura enthusiasts for their extensive lineup of performance motor mount kits. Offered in multiple durometer ratings, their polyurethane mounts let drivers fine-tune the balance between drivetrain rigidity and ride comfort — a level of tunability rarely found in the OE replacement segment.
DEA (also marketed under the DEA/Atlantic brand) offers a broad range of OE-style engine and transmission mounts at competitive price points, covering a wide variety of domestic and import vehicles and making them a practical choice for high-volume repair shops.
Westar rounds out the OE replacement segment with a deep catalog of rubber and hydraulic engine mounts, particularly strong in Asian and European import coverage — a reliable option when you need an exact-fit replacement for harder-to-source applications.
Torque Solution caters to the performance and forced-induction community with solid and insert-style engine mounts machined from billet aluminum and high-durometer polyurethane. Their mount inserts are especially popular as a cost-effective way to firm up a factory mount without replacing the entire assembly.
