When it comes to differentials that deliver maximum traction under the most demanding conditions, Detroit Locker stands as a 100% automatic locking differential that provides ultimate traction for mild to extreme vehicle applications. With 80+ years of product development history and manufacturing optimization, the Detroit Locker brand has earned its reputation as one of the most trusted names in performance differential technology.
How Detroit Locker Differentials Work
Detroit Locker's unique, bullet-proof design is engineered to keep both wheels in drive mode – even if one wheel is lifted off the ground, and it works in forward and reverse. The Detroit Locker is normally locked during straight-line driving and sends 100% of the available torque to both wheels equally. During cornering, the internal components unlock to allow one wheel to spin faster or slower as necessary, automatically differentiating wheel speeds when required. This speed-sensitive operation means you get spool-like strength when accelerating and the flexibility to navigate turns without binding.
Proven Applications and Durability
Initially developed for off-highway, heavy-duty applications, the Detroit Locker became a factory option in some Detroit based OEM muscle cars in the 1960's. Today, Detroit Locker automatic aftermarket locking differentials are well-suited for racing, towing, and off-road uses. Whether you're conquering rock crawling terrain, powering through drag racing launches, or managing heavy towing loads, Detroit Locker has a reputation for delivering traction in mud, snow, rocks and on the track.
Engineering Excellence and Strength
Detroit Lockers have very high "strength density," thanks to continual process innovation, advanced metallurgy, and ultramodern machining methods, and all Detroit Locker designs are intended to handle more torque than the axle shafts they drive. The system features unmatched strength, 100 percent automatic locking, and maintenance-free parts. This clutchless design eliminates wear components, reducing long-term maintenance needs and ensuring consistent performance over the life of the differential.
Advanced Product Lines
Detroit Locker offers specialized variants to meet different performance requirements. The Soft Locker uses a spring generated preload between the side gears to dampen the reengagement action of the Detroit Locker, enhancing operation. This newer generation design addresses one of the traditional characteristics of automatic lockers while maintaining the legendary traction performance that has made Detroit Locker the choice of professional racers and off-road enthusiasts worldwide.
