What Are Differential Pinion Shims?
Differential pinion shims are thin, precision-machined metal spacers that play a critical role in the setup and longevity of your vehicle's differential. Positioned between the pinion gear bearings and the axle housing, these small components do a big job: they allow builders and technicians to dial in exact pinion depth and bearing preload — two of the most important measurements in any differential rebuild or ring-and-pinion installation.
The pinion gear is supported front and back by two tapered roller bearings. Pinion shims are placed between these bearings to apply the correct amount of pressure, setting the bearing preload to manufacturer specifications. Getting this right matters enormously: improper pinion depth causes the ring and pinion gear teeth to mesh incorrectly, leading to excessive noise, heat, and accelerated wear. As one reference standard notes, even the pinion shim thickness must be checked to make sure the gears are placed exactly in the correct position — improper fitment can result in noisy gears and premature component failure.
Pinion Depth vs. Bearing Preload: Why Both Matter
There are two distinct shimming jobs in a differential build. Pinion depth shims control how far the pinion gear sits inside the housing, determining the contact pattern between the ring and pinion teeth. Preload shims (sometimes used in place of a collapsible crush sleeve) set the rotational drag on the pinion bearings themselves. Both must be set correctly before the differential is buttoned up — using a dial indicator and marking compound to confirm the tooth contact pattern is centered and clean.
Because axle housings are subject to minor machining variations from unit to unit, a shim that works perfectly in one housing may not be correct in another. That's why shims are typically available in a range of thicknesses, and experienced builders often need to trial-fit several combinations before arriving at the correct stack height.
When Do You Need New Pinion Shims?
- Any time a ring-and-pinion set is replaced with a new gear ratio
- When rebuilding a differential with new bearings
- After replacing the differential carrier or axle housing
- When correcting a noisy or improperly meshing gear set
- During axle upgrades on lifted trucks and off-road builds where driveline geometry changes
