What Is an Engine Oil Separator?

Engine oil separators — also commonly called oil catch cans or air/oil separators — are devices installed in a vehicle's crankcase ventilation system to intercept and capture oil vapors before they can re-enter the engine's intake tract. As an engine operates, combustion gases escape past the piston rings into the crankcase. These so-called "blow-by" gases carry oil mist, unburnt fuel, and water vapor that must be vented to relieve crankcase pressure. Without a separator in place, this oil-laden vapor is recirculated directly into the intake manifold, where it can coat interior surfaces and bake onto the backs of intake valves — a problem that is especially severe in modern direct-injection engines.

Why Engine Oil Separators Matter

Oil contamination in the intake system leads to a cascade of problems. Carbon deposits restrict airflow, reduce combustion efficiency, and rob the engine of power over time.
