What Is an Exhaust Intermediate Pipe?
The exhaust intermediate pipe is one of the most underappreciated components in a vehicle's exhaust system — yet it plays a critical role in keeping everything running smoothly. The intermediate pipe links the exhaust headers to the cat-back system, acting as the primary conduit that carries combustion gases from the engine toward the catalytic converter, muffler, and ultimately out the tailpipe. Think of it as the backbone that connects the front end of the exhaust system to the rest of the assembly.
On naturally aspirated engines, the intermediate pipe connects directly to the exhaust manifold or header collectors. On dual-exhaust setups, this is also where crossover configurations — the familiar H-pipe or X-pipe designs — come into play.
